Think Aloud About Reading and Writing

As you move through your day, you make many quick choices based on your ability to read and write. If you think aloud as you make these choices, you will help your child learn more about these important skills.

Suppose you need a recipe for a cake. Say, “I don’t have time to read all the recipes in the book. So I’m going to turn to the index in the back. Here under the letter C is a recipe for chocolate cake.” Your child will learn how useful an index can be, and that items in it are alphabetized.

Or suppose you’re writing a quick text or note. Say, “I am asking Grandma a question about when she will be visiting us, so I’d better end this sentence with a question mark.”
