Help Your Child See the Positive Side

Is your child a “glass half-empty” kind of kid? Don't worry. Some people are simply born more pessimistic than others. That doesn’t mean, however, that you can’t help him see the sunnier side of life as he grows. By doing so, you’ll be giving him a valuable tool for dealing with life’s inevitable ups and downs.

Here are two ways to help your child look on the bright side:

  1. Offer an upbeat point of view. If your child complains that going to the park won’t be fun because his friend can’t come, challenge his thinking. “Remember how much fun we had shooting baskets when it was just the two of us?”
  2. Help him work through problems. When he says, “I’ll never understand fractions!” sit down and help him think of ways he could figure them out. Show him that he can solve “impossible” problems if he keeps trying.
