What is the Value of a Chore Well Done?

Should children be paid for doing chores around the house? For everyday responsibilities, it's probably not a good idea. After all, adults don’t get paid for cooking meals, cleaning gutters or washing clothes at home. Those jobs are all just part of what it takes to keep a household running.

Since kids enjoy the benefits of living in a clean, orderly house, they should also be expected to play a part in keeping it that way. In the process, they learn useful skills and develop a sense of themselves as capable people with contributions to make.

For larger jobs, however, you may want to set up some sort of reward system to use with your child. One family assigned points to many extra jobs. They ranged from five points (putting the newspapers out for the recycling pick-up) to 50 points (shoveling snow off the sidewalk and the driveway). The kids could cash in their points for rewards. An ice cream cone cost 50 points, a sleep-over with a friend cost 100, a pair of inline skates cost 1500.
