Try These Conversation Starters
Conversations with children about things that happen when you aren't with them can be frustrating. "How was your day?" you ask. "Fine," your child says. "What did you do?" you ask. "Nothing," she replies.
Don't give up! To improve your conversations:
- Ask specific questions, such as, "What was the best part of your day? What are you studying in science?"
- Ask open-ended questions. This stops kids from giving yes or no answers. Ask, "How did you solve that problem?" or "What was the video about?"
- Talk about current events. See what your child thinks about an upcoming election or controversial issue.
- Mention parts of your day that would interest your child. Perhaps you started a new project or heard a funny story. Give your child as much detail as you would like to hear from her.
- Keep it simple. Sometimes it works just to say, "What do you want to talk about?" You might be surprised by your child's answer!
