Choose Books That Are Right for Your Child
Access to the "right" books when children are young can turn them on to reading for a lifetime.
The good news is there are lots of right books, and they aren’t necessarily expensive or hard to find. To be right, a book just needs to be well-written and designed. Most importantly, it should fit your child's needs and appeal to him.
To find the right books for your child:
- Consider who he is. Look for books that match your child's current interests and personality.
- Don’t hesitate to choose a book that’s a little beyond his ability. You can read it to your child now. He can read it by himself later on.
- Don’t force him to read classics. Some children find contemporary books more appealing, although they may enjoy reading classics as a family.
- Choose books that have strong plots and well-developed characters. Characters that your child can relate to may be particularly appealing.
- Look at the words used. Most should be familiar to your child. It's OK if a few per page are challenging.
